MENG QINGSHENG CGTN Reporter "Professor Zhang, can you share with us your comment on U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan?"

PROF. ZHANG WENSHENG Graduate Institute for Taiwan Studies, Xiamen University "The visit represents the official position of the U.S. government. No matter what the U.S. says about the separation of power between the legislative and the executive branches, they're all part of the U.S. government. Such actions are detrimental to the development of China-U.S. relations, mutual trust, and even peace across the Taiwan Strait."

MENG QINGSHENG CGTN Reporter "China has sent a clear and strong message to the U.S. side, saying the visit will lead to a serious situation and have grave consequences? What's your take on that?"

PROF. ZHANG WENSHENG Graduate Institute for Taiwan Studies, Xiamen University "It would have a devastating effect on Sino-American relations. In fact, since the normalization of diplomatic relations between China and the United States, there have been many conflicts on issues, like ideological differences, human rights, trade and even intellectual property rights. But basically, none of these will lead to a war between China and the U.S. But the Taiwan question, if not handled properly, may lead to a military conflict."

MENG QINGSHENG CGTN Reporter "What do you make of the current state of cross-strait relations, and what impacts will the visit have on the status quo?"

PROF. ZHANG WENSHENG Graduate Institute for Taiwan Studies, Xiamen University "Achievements have been made between the mainland and Taiwan, including three direct links, economic and trade exchanges and personnel exchanges. But there have also been some new problems, including the issue of cross-Strait reunification, and how to start that process. The U.S. has been supporting the separatist forces on the island, by continuous arms sales, legislative interventions, and upgrading the level of U.S.-Taiwan exchanges. Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, to some extent, is an encouragement to the separatists on the island."

MENG QINGSHENG CGTN Reporter "What do you think are the possible solutions to the Taiwan question? And what are the most pressing issues at the moment?"

PROF. ZHANG WENSHENG Graduate Institute for Taiwan Studies, Xiamen University "What Chinese people on both sides want the most is a peaceful solution. But the chances of a peaceful settlement of the Taiwan question are diminishing because of the American meddling. So, there will only be one way, which is a non-peaceful solution. Neither the Taiwan society nor the separatists have the confidence to confront the mainland, and hinder the reunification process. They have placed great hope in the intervention of American forces, and expect Americans to fight a war for Taiwan, which is just wishful thinking. In recent years, with misleading policies of the Taiwan independence forces and Taiwan authorities, the Chinese culture and history, and the concept of China as a country have been changing on the island, and that's detrimental to a peaceful reunification process."
